Welcome Back Lynn
Lynn Wright had been a member for many, many years . I can’t tell you how many years, as most women don’t want their ages divulged. Lynn  had a problem with her eyes and wasn’t able to carve. Luckily she has found a very good eye Doctor and he has been able to help her see well enough to once again carve. Glad to have you back with us  Lynn.

Welcome To The New Members
We have three new members this year so far and a couple that told Kathy they want to visit us again to join. I wrote about Terry Leonard last month. This month Mark Pacholke joined and so did husband and wife Valorie and Daniel Higgins. They all seemed very anxious to learn how to carve and they came to the right place to do it. We have such a diverse group of carvers that no matter what type of carving you want to learn you will be able to find someone in our club that is knowledgeable about it. All the new members walked around the Tuesday members tables and after seeing all the different types of carving that was done, joined right away.

Marcy Will Show Off Her Talents

Marcia Lichnerowicz ( now that’s a mouth full )in case you haven’t met her is the residing president of The NW Indiana Woodworkers Club. She is also an accomplished carver. Marcy will be demonstrating on how to chip carve a Snowman mitten ornament on Feb 7th. She showed me some of the many great designs that she will have available. She already has the cut outs done so all you have to do is bring your chip carving knifes. Should be fun. Thanks Marcy

Committee Ready to Go To Work
A committee of four was established by President Hays to go over the show categories and bring them up to date or modernize them if you will. Bob Stevens, Marcia Lichnerowicz, Barb DeMars and myself will be the committee to go over all the categories and see what needs to be changed. This will be done after the April show to see what if any new category changes need to be changed. Most categories will be left unchanged, but some new ones might be added depending on the response and  outcome of the show. If the previously mentioned items that will be allowed displayed are favorably accepted, then they may be included in the category changes for 2013. Two guys and two girls, a challenge, but should be interesting and  fun.

We Need Your Money
Sounds terrible and harsh, doesn’t it?  But it is a necessary evil to keep our great club existing in the black. I was told by the powers that be, that people that haven’t paid their dues by the month of March will be dropped from the mailing list of April. So if you want to be able to read my profound words of wisdom every month you have got to come up with twenty clams, bucks or whatever. Sorrrrry.

Happy, Happy Birthday

               Len Ellis…………...Feb. 28th

Birthdays are good for you.
Keep on having them for many years to come.
Anyone Know This Guy???
Without these people we would not have a place to have our Tuesday meetings or a place to have our annual show . Thanks to them.

Our Annual Meeting
Our annual meeting was held at the Chesterton Art Gallery on Jan, 15th . This meeting is held every year to discuss  our annual upcoming show in April. Meeting notes can be obtained from our Secretary Bruce Johnston for those that want to see them. Our Treasurer Frank Kik gave his financial report and told of expenses that were taken care of. Our club is in good shape thanks to Franks hard work. Food venders were taken care of by Kathy Hays.
Sanford Pangburn has done a great job so far getting the word out to all the necessary news papers and magazines. Len Ellis has helped to provide his radio station . He will have live broadcasting at the show Saturday and Sunday. Len also is working on a plan to have several of our carvers speak on the Indiana T.V. station. advertising the club and upcoming show. Nice to have friends in High Places. Chuck Swickard is taking on the difficult  job of soliciting  contributions from several establishments. (Hard job but somebody has to do it.) Thanks Chuck.
I have set up 7-8 people to do demonstrations at the show. Applications have been sent out by Dave Kings, and several people have already booked table space for the show. Geri Larson has volunteered to take care of the hospitality room again this year. Darlene Henderson, Bob Sherer, and myself will be taking tickets at the show, but we need more volunteers. We also need people to sell raffle tickets. Not a hard job but a really important one. I will be coming around at the show to see if you can donate a small carving of your choice to be used for door prizes. This will be a time to help out your club and also show off your talents. Thanks.
Frank Kik has already sold 45 tables for the show so if you want to be in the show now is the time to let him know that you want one. Wait to long and you might not get the site you want. Advance ticket sales are dribbling in.
Remember that when you go to sell the tickets that all kids under 16 are free when with an adult. I’m giving mine to my two sons which means all my grandkids can come see gramps free. Nice gift and not that expensive.

First Contributing Sponsor

Frank Kik received his first check of $100 for a Contributing Sponsor from our very own Sanford Pangburn.  Sanford owns and runs his own golf ball retrieval and sales business. For those not aware of it, he scuba dives at golf courses for the golf balls that land in ponds all over the United States. He told me that he was only chased one time by an alligator somewhere in a Florida pond. This is why he is known as a man with a lot of balls. Sanford also is taking care of all the club advertising for the upcoming show. What a guy. Thanks Sanford.

This is a photo of long time member Darold Parkey. Darold moved to Henderson, Nevada several years ago and is still a paid member.  Darold said that he is still carving as you can see, and wanted to stay in touch with all of his many friends in our club.
Bruce Goes On The Road

Our Secretary Bruce Johnston went to a meeting at  The North West Woodworkers Of Indiana to put on a demonstration for them. Probably how to carve a mouse ( just my guess  LOL). While there, he explained about how our club has made some new changes. Changes as to what will be allowed to be displayed and sold at the new show. This will be the first year that woodworking and woodturning of several different varieties can be shown. Intarsia, golf ball and baseball carving , and gourds will also be new this year. With these new changes we hope to make the new show much more diversified and bring in a larger crowd. Thanks Bruce for putting in the extra effort to help out the club.

One Category Change At The Show

It was brought up and voted on at the last meeting to change the category of Bark Carving into two separate categories.
1. Category will be Animate (faces, animals ,ETC). 2. Category will be Inanimate ( Houses and such).

This was done so that people that do Fantasy Houses will not have to compete against peoples carvings of Faces. Most other clubs that have competition in their shows have made this change some time ago. Thanks to the hard work of our new President and Vice Pres. Kathy and Jan, things are starting to change to improve our club. YOU GO GIRLS!!!

Demonstrators For The April Show
Kathy Hays (Madam President) told me that she needed 7 people to do a 45 minute, to an hour demonstration at the April show. She wanted 4 people to  demonstrate on Sat. and 3 on Sunday. Here is a list of people that I talked to that volunteered to help out. But not necessarily in this order.
1. Jerry Lambert…A type of bird carving
2. George Sarver…Chip Carving
3. Barb DeMars...Kolrosing in Color
4. Linda Boatright…Wood Burning
5. Clarence McCoy…Caricature carving
6. Jim Smith...Caricature Carving
7. Darlene Henderson...Scandinavian Carving
I also have a few extras just in case.

It Is Time of  Bereavement
The club was notified by Chuck Swickard on Jan. 24th that Vern Schrader had lost his beautiful wife and sweetheart Ruth of many years on Jan. 19th. Ruth and Vern were married in 1975 which gave them many years to create loving memories. Vern for those that don’t know, was one of the founding fathers of our club and the first editor of The Burl. I had talked with Vern a few times in the past when he caught me messing up something in the newsletter and jokingly called to correct me. Sometimes, I have been half tempted to screw up things just to see if he is paying attention to what I am writing. I finally got to meet Vern and Ruth on the 24th. I just wish it could have been for a better reason. Our hearts go out to you Vern, we are so sorry for your great loss.

WE Almost Lost Dave
I got a call from Dave Williams the other day to notify me of a few mishaps that he had. Dave told me that he had a knee replacement done on Nov. 27th. This is the only good thing that happened to him, if you want to call that good. December 27th, as he was going out his back door to go and get something out of his shed, he fell. When falling he tore the new replacement knee out of joint and when
his knee snapped it not only made a 18 inch gash in his leg but, severed a main artery in his leg. On top of that he shattered his ankle. An ambulance was called and they showed up in just a few minutes, thank God. The paramedics almost lost him on the way to the hospital because of such a huge amount of blood loss. Dave told me  they gave him 11 pints of blood in the ambulance and it just barely kept him alive. The doctors didn’t give him a lot of hope, but somehow were able to save his life. They told him they were going to leave the ankle as is until later when he would be able to better go through another operation to fix it. Dave said he was in Intensive Care for 11 days and after that had to stay on his back and not move for 6 weeks. After that he will have 3 months or more of rehab. The doctor that performed his miraculous surgery was  Dr. Anthony LeVanda. Dave called me because he needed to talk to Jim Smith to ask him if he would make a carving for him to give as a gift for his life saving surgeon. Of course Jim said yes and last Tuesday he showed me 2 of the 3 caricatures he was doing for Dave. As you might guess, they were very well done and very funny. I don’t think Jim could do a bad carving if he wanted to. Between Jim and I we will try to keep you all updated on how Dave is progressing.

Styrofoam Class Went Well
I gave a class on how to carve a face on a block of floral type of Styrofoam. We had 19 people attend and somehow they all seemed to be happy with the results that ended up with. We even had all three of our newest members participate. The class lasted about 2 hours . Carving in the foam goes extremely fast. Much faster than you can imagine. If the same face were to be attempted in basswood it would have taken several days instead of hours.

One Last Word For The Month
Don’t forget to pay your dues.
Don’t forget to get your carving for the friendship staff done so that it can be assembled. I’m as guilty  as lot of you. Mine isn’t done yet but, will be soon.  Sorry Kathy.
