Brand Spanking New Member
I want all to welcome our newest member Terry
Leonard who joined us on Dec. 13th . Terry told me that he was visiting the Main building for another reason and happen to see our members sitting around and carving. He became inquisitive and asked a few people what we were all doing. Members showed him some of the things they were carving and he became fascinated. He became so interested that he came back a second time and got hooked. It turns out that Terry had been retired since 2002 and was getting quite bored just sitting around the house with not much to occupy his time other than the normal "Honey Do" list. He had been an avid radio controlled airplane builder and flyer. We gave him a knife and some wood and bark and he left a happy man. Terry is excited to learn everything that there is about carving and he came to the right place. We have so many talented people in our club that there isn’t any type of carving that someone in the club is not proficient at.
New Spiral Trees Showing Up
I noticed an influx of spiral Christmas trees being carved at the last few Tues. meetings. I think the idea came out of one of the new carving magazines. A lot of people have been doing them and it’s amazing how so many were able to put their own spin on how to make them. I haven’t tried one yet but as soon as I get time I’m going to give it a try.

Upcoming Show
Don’t forget and not be ready. The show will be on April 14th - 15th. You have plenty of time to get your carving done if you don’t wait till the last minute like me.
I Finally Succumbed
I have been asked to do a class for several years and I gave Kathy a date that I will teach a class on facial carving. I haven’t wanted to do a class like this as it can’t be taught in just a few hours. As you probably know I primarily do carvings of Spirit faces and bark houses. I was taught by a friend to carve on Floral Styrofoam which can be done extremely fast. I tried teaching a class at Darlene Henderson’s home and it seemed to come out fairly well.
I will teach the class on January 24th. I will supply the Styrofoam. All you have to bring is your regular tools, and a large towel to catch the foam, as it gets quite messy. I will attempt to teach, on how to carve a spirit face. I will put up a sign up sheet every week till class time. I need to know in advance on how many will attend to have ample supplies available. I will let you know about February’s class next month.
Cherished Christmas Cards
Gail and I received Christmas cards from all our friends and loved them all, but three stood out that we will cherish. This is the second time we got one from Irv Olsen and his wife Dottie that had one of Dottie’s watercolor paintings on the cover. Dottie is such an accomplished painter. We love it. We also received cards from Sister Celine ( our precious Flying Nun) and Sister Marjaleen that had their watercolor paintings on the cover. The sisters have been taking watercolor classes and the cards they sent me are true treasures and will remain on display forever.
Happy, Happy Birthday
Jan Tennis…………………Jan. 3rd
Jeff Postma………………..Jan 23rd
Sophie Wojihoski………….Jan 25th
Birthdays are good for you.
Keep on having them for many years to come.

What a Party
For those of who were unable to attend boy, did you miss a great party. We had at last count 33 people in attendance. Almost all had carvings to exchange in the grab bag. Food was fabulous, and over flowing If you went away hungry it was your own fault. Geri Larson acted as Mrs. Santa and gave out the gifts and saw to it that no one received their own carvings. She did a great job as usual. Many thanks to Kathy and Jan for putting it all together once more . It could never have happened without all their hard work.
Bad News Coming
January means club dues have to be paid - Sorrry.
Dues can be paid to Frank Kik and remain as they have been for many, many years only $20 dollars. Dues are necessary so that we can provide this fabulous news letter and the annual show. Frank Kik can normally be reached at the Tuesday meetings. You can also mail in your dues to Frank at 7425 Arizona Ave. Hammond, IN.46323

We Need Help
Frank Kik has already given a check to Woodland Park as a reserve for our show. Bruce Johnston and Dave Kings have already notified several Carving Magazines of our show.Sanford Pangburn volunteered to take care of advertising.
Now to the good part. We will need volunteers to do the following jobs at the show.
1. Person to handle the Hospitality room (taking care of coffee and rolls for the carvers Sat. & Sun.
2. Demonstrations. Person to get volunteers for Sat.& Sun. to do demonstrations hourly.
3. Selling tickets. We need people to take care of selling attendance tickets at the door.
4. Getting donations (gift certificates, etc.) from restaurants and other retail establishments. Car dealers and Harley Dealer have helped a lot in the past.
People that won’t have a table at the show or have someone to help watch their table, this will really help out the club in a big way. If you can please, help out by volunteering. Please notify Frank Kik or me if you will be able to help out. Thanks!
Show Tables Are Going Fast
Dave Kings has sent out Show Applications already and has received quite a few back. If you want a table for the show please notify Frank Kik at 219-845-2695. You don’t have to pay for the table now, but have to let him know if you want one. If you don’t, your favorite table may be given to someone outside the club that has already requested it. Don’t delay - let him know.
Uncle Len In The News
I just found out that Uncle Len (Len Ellis) will be featured in the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce news. This year the Chamber of Commerce is celebrating their 100th year. Len was one of the past presidents and was photographed with the new president. Vic Erdelac was quick to ask Uncle Len if he was the original president. I think the question came as a surprise to Len, as he didn’t say anything for a few seconds. He then laughed and said no ,seeing as how he is not over 100 years old. He was just 39 years old though, which was very young to have such a job. Congrats Uncle Len.
Carving Demonstrations In November
We were lucky enough to not only have one, but two carving classes given in November. Darlene Henderson gave a class on Nov. 15th on how to do a Scandinavian style of carving called Kolrosing (coal-rose-ing). She showed how you use a very smooth piece of wood and use a Kolrosing knife or other sharp edge of a knife and scribe decretive symbols on almost anything in your home that needs a little sprucing up. (Spoons, bowls, etc.) Once done she gave us all some coffee grounds to rub in the areas that we had scribed and finished off with some Walnut oil to seal the carving. It was amazing how pretty they all came out. It was fun to try a different form of carving. Thanks so much Darlene.
The following week Nov. 22nd Clarence McCoy (our renowned caricature carver) taught a class on doing a Spiral Santa Claus ornament. Clarence has been a teacher of carving for quite a few years, and has the patience of a Saint. It was fun to see how he came up with a way to make the spirals come out looking perfect and so good. The caricature faces he does are a treasure. I know, as I have one of his treasures in my china cabinet. Everyone came away with a really great looking ornament. Thanks Clarence once more for sharing your many talents with us all.
Kathy Was Chipping Away
Kathy Hays gave a class on Dec. 6th on how to carve a Chipped carved Christmas ornament. She not only supplied everyone with an ornament but even saved us all hours of drawing by putting the pattern to be carved on each and every ornament.
Kathy is one of the best at chip carving in our club. It truly is not as easy to do as she makes it look. Just when you think you did everything just right a big chip falls out and you have to start out all over to make it look good. It’s sometimes very frustrating, but if you follow her lead you can come out with something very beautiful. Thanks Kathy for showing us once more just one of your many talents.
Smile Awhile With Me
We wonder why people have trouble learning the English language - even those of us that have it as our first language! Here are some great examples.
1. The bandage was wound around the wound.
2. The farm was used to produce produce.
3. The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
4. Since there is no time like the present, he
thought it was time to present the present.
5. I did not object to the object.
6. They were to close to the door to close it.
Sophie Returns
We all had a great surprise visit at the Tuesday meeting when Sophie Wojihoski showed up with her daughter. Sophie had some heart surgery done and looked really good. She even came to the Christmas party. It was nice seeing her.
