June, 2010 “Old Geezers” “Geezers” (Slang for old man) they are easy to spot: At sporting events, during the playing of the National Anthem, Old Geezers hold their caps over their hearts and sing without embarrassment. They know the words and believe in them. Old Geezers remember World War I, the Depression, World War II, Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Normandy and Hitler. They remember the Atomic Age, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Jet Age and the Moon Landing, not to mention Vietnam. If you bump into an Old Geezer on the sidewalk, he will apologize. If you pass an Old Geezer on the street, he will nod or tip his cap to a lady. Old Geezers trust strangers and are courtly to women. Old Geezers hold the door for the next person and always, when walking, make certain the lady is on the inside for protection. Old Geezers get embarrassed if someone curses in front of women and children and they don’t like filth on TV or in movies. Old Geezers have moral courage. They seldom brag unless it’s about their grandchildren. It’s the Old Geezers who know that our great country is protected, not by the politicians or the police, but by the young men and women in the military serving their country. This country needs Old Geezers with their decent values. We need them now more than ever. So remember the Old Geezers, as we celebrate Memorial Day with all our loved ones. Thank God for Old Geezers! Helping hand please? To all our readers out there. Should you find yourself with any news worthy items that you feel our readers would like to hear about. Write an e-mail or a note to either a fellow board member or myself. I will try to enter it into the Burl Newsletter. This way we can share our current news events with our fellow carvers who are both near and far away . Thank you

Walnut Burl Staff Editor……………Maria Azcona Phone (219)902-7953 mail: mzazcona@gmail.com Contributing Editor…………....Don Schroeder Wishing a quick recovery for Sr. Celine For those of you who were wondering where our dear Sr. Celine has been lately. I received a call from her. She had been under the weather recently with what she thought was a sciatic nerve problem. It turns out after a few visits with a variety of Dr’s and an MRI. She has a fracture of the spine! She’s been ordered to stop everything and take it real easy. That’s a tall order for someone as active as she is! Hope you get better real soon Sister. We’re all missing you out here! Looking for a few Volunteers I know that Larry Hoffman has only been here for 6 months or so, but thanks to his generosity we are enjoying coffee for our weekly meetings. I hear that Larry and his wife would like to plan a trip sometime during the summer. So I’m asking ahead of time for a few people who might want to assist him with the coffee duties on the week or so he is gone. Please contact a board member or myself if you are able to help out. Seminars A big thank you to Clarence McCoy for his recent seminar. The subject was on bear caricatures. From all the laughter and talking going on, it sure had all the ear markings of a huge success! Way to go Clarence!! Jim Smith is next! On June 15th he will be giving us our next seminar on a subject that is yet to be decided on. You know it’s going to be a good one! So get your tools sharp and ready for this next one! Have you spread the word yet?
