33rd ANNUAL DUNELAND WOODCARVERS SHOW - 2009
By Bruce Johnston
The 33rd annual Duneland Woodcarvers Show was held April 18th and 19th at Woodland Park in Portage, Indiana. Approximately 700 visitors came to enjoy the art of over 60 carvers.
At this year’s show we were also honored to have Bob Guge and Joshua Guge displaying some of their work on the main hall. Bob was there on Saturday to talk to people about bird carving and Josh was there both days to talk about fish and bird carving.
Judging was held on Saturday morning with 150 entries in 38 categories. In addition, we had a whittling contest in which the contestants had two hours, and could only use knives (no gouges), to turn a piece of basswood 2”x2”x6” into something recognizable or not. The winner was Vic Erdelac.
A special thanks go to our judges; Joshua Guge - an experienced fish and bird carver who has won blue ribbons at the Ward Foundation competition, Barbara DeMars - an experienced carver and artist in other media, and Clarence McCoy – an experienced caricature carver.
Best of Show went to J. R. Cadawas, for his relief carving of the Last Supper. Second Best of Show went to Jerry Lambert, for his pair of Eastern Bluebirds.
Third Best of Show went to Ken Palmer for his Mountain Man bust.
Carvers Choice this year went to J. R. Cadawas and Ron Muskina had Best Table Display. Congratulations to these special people and all our ribbon winners in all the categories.
Additionally, I personally appreciate all the work that was done in the judging area by, first and foremost, Hank Kaber, as well as Terry Brooks, Lee Nedreau, Carol Muskina, Margaret Kaber, Don Good, Mike Truax and Jack Allendorf.
